The next evolution in test automation strategy is upon us, brought about by generative AI (Gen AI), which has increased the possibilities and capabilities within the testing realm. Gen AI supports tedious tasks, such as creating test data, generating test cases, and even identifying patterns for possible tests. It has the potential to enhance the efficiency and coverage of our automated testing efforts significantly.

Technology alone, however, is not enough to achieve the full potential of test automation. A successful strategy must be well planned, properly executed, and continually improved to achieve faster development cycles, enhanced test coverage, and improved product quality. When it comes to adopting Gen AI into your test automation strategy, the best approach is to integrate but not abdicate. Pick the spots where AI can best support your objectives, but don’t ignore the need for human validation and oversight.

While Gen AI holds immense promise in test automation, it must be integrated into a holistic strategy that incorporates best practices, human expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Combining the power of automation with a thoughtful approach to strategy is the key to realizing the full potential of test automation.

• Testing is a necessary part of the solution delivery lifecycle. In traditional environments, however, it is seen as tedious and time consuming. Because it is the last step before deployment, it faces pressure to "get done" so that value can be realized.
• IT and testing/quality assurance (QA) leaders are always looking for tactics and tools to support testing and make it easier.
• Gen AI is seen as a way to make test automation strategy, planning, and execution less painful, so that you can focus on executing the strategy.

• The struggle with the “test squeeze” is real! Having a test automation strategy informs how you make decisions on what level of test coverage you need or what test scripts and use cases you can omit or ignore. Yet, it is still not enough.
• Finding the balance is difficult. Although Gen AI can help, there are so many tools and use cases that it is hard to know where to start. Added to this, you need to know how to address the elements of your test automation strategy so that it will deliver the highest value to your test/QA teams and the broader organization.

• Determine your level of readiness. It can be tempting to adopt Gen AI when you see its promise for improved speed and quality. But be sure to look before you leap, to ensure that your organization is ready to leverage the benefits, and absorb the costs, that Gen AI brings.
• Recognize that tools alone will not help. When integrating AI into your test automation strategy, the focus should not be solely on tools. Data and technical skills are also required to be successful.
• Pick your battles. Prioritize your pains and use cases to attack the challenges that will return the greatest value in your test automation strategy and planning.
